Position: Nutrition Specialist (Short-Term Consultancy engagement)

Organization: KONEТА

Duty Station: Yei, South Sudan

Contract Duration: 6 Months (15 working days per quarter)

Reports to: Program Manager.

1. ABOUT KONEТА

KONETA is a humanitarian and Development National Non-Governmental Organization in South Sudan legally registered with Relief and Rehabilitation commission (RRC). The core mandate of the organization is to drive and champion local and sustainable innovations to improve social economic status and quality of life particularly of the disadvantaged group of people (Youths, Women, children and Person living with Disabilities through provision of Digital innovations and practical entrepreneurship skills, integrated health, Nutrition, Food security and sustainable livelihood, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Education both basic and life skilling through vocational programs, social protection and peace build interventions in order to improve the social economic status to restore the hope among the most venerable communities in south Sudan. Our ultimate goal is to reach people in the entire country to build the resilience through sustainable local innovative initiatives.

2. Project and position Summary

In alignment with national priorities and global frameworks such as the Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) Guidelines and Food Systems Strategy, KONETA is implementing a nutrition initiative aimed at improving quality of dietary diversity and feeding practices for children under 2years using locally available foods such as peanut butter and Nutrition sensitive agricultural approaches. To ensure technical quality, accountability, and results-based programming, KONETA seeks to engage a qualified Nutrition Specialist as an individual consultant. The specialist will work intermittently (15 days per quarter) over a period of 6 months to strengthen the quality of infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices, enhance utilization of local nutritious foods, and build staff and community capacity.

3. Purpose of the Assignment

The overall objective of this consultancy is to provide high-level technical support to improve the quality, effectiveness, and accountability of KONETA’s nutrition interventions, ensuring alignment with national guidelines, and global best practices.

Key specific objectives of the Assignment

  • Improve dietary diversity among children aged 6-23 months

  • Promote use of locally available, nutrient-dense foods

  • Strengthen MIYCN (Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition) and family led MUAC interventions.

  • Build capacity of KONETA staff, CNVs, and community structures

  • Support integration of innovative nutrition-sensitive agriculture practices

4. Scope of Work / Key Responsibilities

(i). Technical Support & Program Design

Review existing nutrition program strategies and provide technical recommendations

Support development/refinement of MIYCN training materials and tools

Design context-appropriate recipes using locally available foods Ensure alignment with national nutrition guidelines and global standards

Ensure integration of gender, equity, and social inclusion principles in all KONETA’s Nutrition initiatives.

(ii). Capacity Building

Facilitate capacity building session, training and refresher for:

a. Staff

b. Community Nutrition Volunteers (CNVs)

c. Lead Mothers/Fathers d. Local stakeholders such as County Health Department, County Agriculture Department.

Develop practical training aids (flipcharts, demonstration guides, IEC materials)

(iii). Community-Based Nutrition Interventions

Support establishment and strengthening of:

a. Mother-to-mother and father-to-father support groups

b. Cooking demonstration sessions

c. Household nutrition education.

d. Family led MUAC approach. Promote behavior change communication (BCC) strategies

(iv). Integration with Agriculture & WASH

  • Promote nutrition-sensitive agriculture (kitchen gardens, poultry, etc.)

  • Support integration of WASH practices in nutrition programming

  • Encourage production and consumption of nutrient-rich crops

5. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEAL)

  • Develop simple monitoring tools for tracking dietary diversity and feeding practices

  • Conduct periodic field visits and supportive supervision

  • Analyze data and provide actionable insights

  • Document best practices, lessons learned, and success stories

  • Conduct supportive supervision and field monitoring visits

  • Assess quality of service delivery using standard checklists Provide practical recommendations for improvement.

6. Reporting

Submit quarterly technical reports including:

a) Activities conducted b) Key achievements c) Challenges and recommendations Provide a final consultancy report with strategic guidance

  • Deliverables Inception report with work plan Training reports and participant evaluations

  • Monitoring tools and data analysis summaries

  • Quarterly progress reports

  • Final comprehensive report

7. Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Food Science, or related field

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in nutrition programming, preferably in humanitarian or development contexts

  • Knowledge of nutrition-related policies and guidelines at the national or international level and familiarity with international and national humanitarian operations, coordination systems and mandates of donors (UN agency and other NGO).

  • Strong expertise in MIYCN/IYCF programming Proven experience in training and capacity building

  • Experience working with local food systems and nutrition-sensitive agriculture Familiarity with South Sudan nutrition policies and context is an added advantage

8. Working Conditions

Field-based work in Yei and surrounding communities Flexible working schedule (15 days per quarter) Close collaboration with KONETA team.

9. Payment Terms

Payments will be made upon submission and approval of deliverables No advance payment will be made unless otherwise agreed. The consultant is responsible for his or her own tax obligations.

10. Ethical Considerations and Safeguarding

The consultant is required to: Adhere to Comply with KONETA’s safeguarding, child protection, and PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) policies Maintain confidentiality and data protection standards
