ABOUT BBC MEDIA ACTION:
BBC Media Action was founded in 1999 by the BBC as its international development charity. It applies the editorial standards of the BBC, build on its values and often work closely with the BBC World Service and other BBC departments. However, BBC Media Action is legally (registered in England and Wales under charity number 1076235) and financially independent and work to a distinct mission. Originally known as BBC World Service Trust, its name was changed to BBC Media Action in December 2011.

BBC Media Action uses media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries. It partners with civil society, local media and governments to:

  • Produce creative programmes based on robust research in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.
  • Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

BBC Media Action began working in South Sudan in the lead-up to its historic 2011 independence referendum, training journalists to provide impartial coverage and help audiences exercise their voting rights. Since then, BBC Media Action work has expanded to support one of the world’s youngest countries on its journey towards sustainable development. Its current project across the country include national multi-language radio drama Life in Lulu (LIL), Girls’ Education South Sudan (GESS) and amplify women’s voices to build understanding about sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls, and tackle harmful norms and taboos.

Girl’ Education South Sudan (GESS) is an initiative of the Ministry of General Education and Instruction (MoGEI) of the Government of South Sudan and is funded by UK-Aid, Global Affairs Canada (GAC), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the European Union (EU). It is an inclusive programme that will transform the lives of a generation of children in South Sudan – especially girls and those at the margins of society– through education.

The impact of the Programme is to continue to transform the life chances of a generation of South Sudanese children (particularly but not exclusively girls) through education, while stabilizing priority areas of the education sector and concurrently seeking to deliver improved quality education.

The outcomes of the Programme will be an improvement in girl’s educational attainment from that already achieved in GESS1; building further gains on school enrolment, reducing barriers to education and promoting equity in access for all children.

The outputs of the Programme are: Cash Transfers to individual girls; Capitation Grants to schools; Behavioral Change; Learning Groups and Quality Interventions, Accelerated Learning and Livelihoods for adolescents previously without access to education.

Role of BBC Media Action in GESS:

Within GESS, BBC Media Action is leading the behavior change communication (BCC) component of the programme. This component involves the production of the popular 15-minute factual radio magazine programme Our School and running of community outreach activities.
