INTRODUCTION
A value chain describes the full range of activities that are required to bring a product or service from conception, through the intermediary phases of production & delivery to final consumers, and final disposal after use. In agriculture, it can be thought of as a set of processes & flows from the inputs to production to processing, marketing and to the final the consumer. This includes activities such as design, production, marketing, distribution and support services up to the final consumer.
This approach combines the strengths of value chain analysis with the promotion of sustainable, market-based solutions (MBSs) that respond to the recurrent needs of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, (MSMEs) including farmers. Value chain analysis is important in understanding markets, inter-firm relationships, and critical constraints that limit growth and industry competitiveness. Collaboration among private sector and market actors to address value chain constraints can result in MBS that are sustainable in the long run and that do not distort local markets. This training course aims at guiding participants towards development of sustainable value chains.
