The Government of South Sudan (GoSS) has received funding from the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands towards the cost of the Water for Lakes Programme. The Programme implemented by Euroconsult Mott MacDonald has allocated funding to Water for Fish and Habits Component in Lakes State and SNV Netherlands Development Organisation is one of the recruited Service Providers (NGOs) for Implementation of a “Fisheries Development Programme at Selected Lake and River Sites in Lakes State, South Sudan; mainly in Rumbek Centre (Lake Akeu), Yirol East (Lake Shambe, River Nile), and Yirol West (Lake Anyii, Lake Nyibor and Lake Yirol and River Payei).
The principle objective/goal of the project is to improve food security and increase incomes among the target fishing communities and associated trades people in counties of Rumbek Centre, Yirol East and Yirol West by end of the project” through promotion of increased and sustainable use of water bodies in Lakes State for fishing activities.
In order to achieve the above project goal, two key specific objectives are as below:
- To increase fish production by 20% for fisher folks (men and women) in the target counties by end of the project;
- To improve fish marketing in the target counties of Lakes state by 50% by end of the project.
Project key target results include: (1) Increased fish production by 20% for target fisher folks (men and women) in the selected counties by end of the project and; (2) Improved fish marketing in the target area by 50% by end of the project.
The above main results will be achieved through mobilisation, organisation and strengthening fisherfolks (men and women); fish traders and inputs dealers through practical trainings on sustainable fish production best practices; quality fish processing techniques/practices; basic business and marketing skills; and promotion of village saving and loan associations (VSLAs). In addition, sustainable fisheries extension service delivery will be ensured by strengthening capacity of the directorate of fisheries development of state ministry of animal resources and fisheries of Lakes state (SMARF-LS) on technical and logistical areas that will be identified by the findings of this baseline survey.
