Nutrition Officer - ACROSS

LOCATION: Lasu Refugee Camp – Yei –South Sudan

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ACROSS is looking for a suitably qualified candidate for the position of Nutrition Officer to be based in Yei implementing the Across UNICEF funded Nutrition Program in Lasu Refugee Camps in the former Central Equatoria State. The Nutrition Officer has the overall responsibility of providing direct implementation of nutrition in the camp by effective nutrition services delivery. The Nutrition officer will be responsible for IYCF, IMSAM and ensure the functionality of the OTP, with a focus on nutrition outreach and improving
the nutritional status of the community through establishing mother to mother support groups. They shall ensure that Across delivers the highest standards on nutritional care as per South Sudan MOH Nutrition Guidelines. The candidate shall perform the following duties as listed below;

· She/he reports to the nutrition coordinator on nutrition weekly activities of the team.

· Provide on job training and IYCF/IMSAM mentoring to nutrition assistants

· Submitting nutrition reports to the nutrition coordinator.

· Organize with the nutrition assistants on the criteria of establishing mother to mother support group

· Liaising with child protection officers to identify infants with special needs in the camp

· Making home visit and follow up for special need infants and mothers.

· To promote positive Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices in the community.

· Training and mentoring nutrition assistants/counsellor and lead mother groups on iycf key messages.

· Provide on job training and mentoring to breastfeeding mothers in TSFP and BSFP

· Counselling mothers with special needs on matters related to breastfeeding and child care.

· Printing and distributing IEC material to nutrition assistants.

· Educate the child caregivers on the food preparation procedure through food demonstration.

· Educate mothers on the importance of giving the therapeutic food to the malnourished child only and in the right quantities per day.

· Requesting for staff per diem and other funds to facilitate the daily operation of the activities.

· Participate in identifying special need infants (orphans or abandoned infants) and mothers with breastfeeding problems (inverted nipple, breast engorgement etc) and counseling them accordingly.

· Any other task assigned to them by the nutrition coordinator or health team leader.

· Supervise nutrition assistants and community nutrition volunteers and ensure their day to day activities are planned and efficiently carried out.

QUALIFICATIONS – ESSENTIAL

Applications shall not be considered from candidates who do not possess ALL the Essential Qualifications

Diploma in nursing or nutrition with appropriate certificates and licensees. Prior supervisory experience in a public health setting and knowledge of nutritional intervention is highly desirable.

Have technical background and knowledge in IYCF or CMAM and demonstrated work experience in designing and implementing CMAM or IYCF components and hygiene promotion/Nutrition education programs;

1 to 2 years’ experience in Management of emergency nutrition; NGO & refugee camp setting experience preferred.

Knowledge and experience in Nutrition intervention, and hygiene promotion Experience in participatory techniques and community mobilization;
