Course Content
• Basic Writing:
- The five Ws: who, what, when, where and why
- How to conduct an interview (preps/follow-up questions)
- How to build a structure for the piece (establishing the hierarchy of information)
- Headline/Intro writing
- Thinking about the audience/reader (message)
- Thinking about the use of language/words
• Understanding video/TV:
- What makes a video report interesting?
- How to make use of one’s voice (voice coaching/public speaking tips)
- How to do stand-ups in front of a camera (on-camera behavior)
• Ethics/Fact-Checking:
- A close look at what the era of fake news means for the industry
- Providing accurate sources
- Checking accuracy of photos/videos
• Social Media:
- The transformation of the communications landscape
- An understanding of why it’s important to use social media in journalism
- How to engage with audience/readers
- Filtering out fake news (linked to the previous segment of syllabus)
- Utilizing social media for coverage. Example: using Facebook Live
- Using social media to promote work/depicting an unbiased image on different online platforms
Outcome:
At the end of the course, participants will
- gain an understanding of fundamental principles of journalism and reporting methods
- be able to write better stories, using inviting intros and headlines
- be able to improve their use of social media to promote their organization, activities, products and services
