CMMB South Sudan is seeking qualified and suitable candidates for the following position:

JOB TITLE: Midwife
LOCATION Mvolo
REPORTING TO Project Manager

Job Responsibilities:

• Administer PNC and family planning services
• Give the job related care while respecting medical prescriptions and protocols that apply in the service.
• Ensure admission of patient and follow up of labour
• Assist normal delivery, reception of new-born care (including preparation for caesarian section)
• Carry out complicated deliveries in collaboration with the head midwife and the doctor
• Ensure the follow up of the new-borns and the mothers in the maternity ward
• Prepare the discharge of mothers and babies.
• Admit pregnant women when required.
• Welcome patients; take history and vital signs. Following admission criteria for hospitalization or advice for NAC / PNC consultation.
• Complete register book appropriate and write the complete information in hospitalization chart
• Explain the ward’s functioning, provide needed linen
• Follow up of every woman in labour and follow up with parthogram efficiently once the active fase of labour has started.
• Inform the head midwife / doctor when labour doesn’t progress correctly
• In case of induction or stimulation of labour with oxytocin, verify the medical prescription and respect CMMB protocol
• Provide on admission HIV prophylaxis Treatment to PMTCT mothers that are in active phase of labour.
• Assist normal delivery following active management of the 3rd stage of labour, as per protocol.
• Reception of Newborn: Carry out first care, detection of complications, if it is needed, carry out resuscitation.
• Early detection of complication during labour of post-delivery and Inform head midwife or doctor
• According to experience and indications of the head midwife, take charge independently of the following cases of prolonged labour or delivery (labour obstruction due to ruptured membranes and stimulation of labour with oxytocin or misoprostol, shoulder dystocia, breach delivery, face presentation, twin delivery)
• According to experience and with the agreement of the head midwife, take charge independently of the following complications post-partum haemorrhage, first trimester haemorrhage (miscarriage,…) third trimester haemorrhage, manual vacuum aspiration (in case of incomplete abortion), umbillical cord prolapsed, hypertension, pre- eclampsia and eclampsia, threatened premature delivery (tocolytics and lung ripening), foetal intra uterine death, artificial placenta delivery and uterine revision, labour with scarred uterus or overstretched uterus
• According to experience and with the agreement of the head midwife, administer certain medication independently: Paracetamol, Metoclopramide, Oxytocin, Methylergometrine, Misoprostol, Salbutamol, Nifédipine, Magnesium sulphate, Amoxycilline, Ampicilline, Metronidazole, Gentamycine according to the situation
• Take vital signs of every patient according to Maternity protocols
• Distribute-administer the medication according to the prescribed time
• Make a daily tour in the Maternity ward with the responsable midwife, the ward’s doctor, surgeon, anaesthetist while writing down the medication to order, the laboratory examinations to be done and completing the hand-over report
• Ensure post-delivery follow up (deliveries and caesarian sections): pain control, high of the uterus, colouring of the conjunctives, breastfeeding, wound care, medication, drip, bladder catheterisation etc. Detection of complications and inform the supervisor.
• Be assured of a correct nutritional state, a good hydration (liquid balance if necessary) and intestinal transit of patients. Promotion of breastfeeding.
• Provide Kangaroo Mother Care and close follow up of glucose levels, temperature to LBW new-borns and support the mother with alternative breastfeeding methods.
• Provide HIV prophylaxis treatment immediately after delivery to new-borns from HIV positive mothers and ensure that PMTC focal person will follow up the mother and newborn before being discharged from the department Supervise new-born care daily: temperature, weight, umbillical cord, fontanelle, skin condition etc. Early complication detection and inform supervisor.
• Supervise the carrying out of vaccination (VPO and BCG) of new-borns
• Ensure sanitary education of patients; advise mothers on useful topics for their home return; breastfeeding, emergency signs of post-partum complications
• Promotion of other services: PNC and Family Planning.
• Ensure the patient’s correct understanding of possible treatment
• Verify that the patient has received the documents: birth certificate, vaccination card, etc
• Ensure the disinfection of the bed; make sure that linen, blankets and mosquito nets are taken to the laundry room
• Complete and gather the patient’s file and hand over to the head midwife
Education
• Certificate or Diploma in Midwifery (essential)
• Good knowledge of MoH procedures and guidelines for Hospital
• English essential, Guru and Arabic desirable
• Experience in the management of Health Education activities
• Experience in the preparation of health reports
