Initiatives to Increase Local Seed Production in South Sudan

The Seed Trade Association of South Sudan (STASS) is an umbrella body formed with support from AGRA in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS). The main purpose of the association is to coordinate and oversee activities of seed production and trading in the country by its member seed companies to ensure that quality seed is produced and made available for every farmer to access. Currently most of the seed companies are based in Juba with main production taking place in Magwi. There is one seed company based in Torit.

The Association would love to see seed produced across the country to minimise logistical challenges and also create jobs for farmers who would be contracted as seed out-growers by the seed companies. It is on these bases that, we are proposing partnership with NGOs, and also Donors, that since NGOs have the resources for supporting farmers to increase their production so as to have enough for household consumption and surplus for the market. Such farmers can be subcontracted as seed multipliers by a seed company so that they produce seed for the company on contract farming bases. This way, the NGO would achieve its target improved farmers’ incomes, the farmers would benefit from the ready market provided by the seed company, and the seed company would have increased volume of seed for trade, and generally we would have increased security across the country significantly. And by ensuring that quality seed is produced, we would have reduced concerns of lack of poor seed being given to farmers.

For details on this, please reach out to the association for further discussions. Just know that, together we can make South Sudan Food Secure.
