Online Certificate Course on Disaster Management

Start date: 1st June 2019

**Capacity Africa Institute is pleased to announce a Disaster Management Online Certificate Course.

The Impact of Natural Disasters

Globally, disasters are on the increase, impacting communities and nations with grave social and economic consequences and threatening the survival, dignity and livelihoods of the vulnerable sections of human populations. Shifting socio-economic situations, unplanned urbanization, environmental degradation, climate variability and change, geological hazards, competition for scarce natural resources, and the threat of epidemics are factors that compound the impact of disasters. Disasters increasingly impact the global economy and the sustainable development of developing countries. The global impact of natural disasters took a turn for the worse in 2010 with an uptick in human fatalities and great economic damages. There were 385 natural disasters worldwide that killed more than 300,000 people, affected over 217 million others and caused $ 123.9 billion in economic damages, according to the Annual Disaster Statistical Review 2010.

The number of victims increased from 198.7 million in 2009 to 217.3 million in 2010, while economic damages from natural disasters in 2009 were $47.6 billion.

Two mega-disasters made 2010 the deadliest year in at least two decades," said the report.

First, Haiti suffered 222,570 fatalities, and had over 39.1 per cent of its population — or a total of 3.9 million victims — affected by the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake.

Second, Russia, which was affected by extreme temperatures, floods and wildfires, had a total of 55,800 deaths. Most fatalities were due to the heat wave that occurred from June to September.

In terms of economic impact, the Chilean earthquake of Feb. 27, 2010, ranked highest with $30 billion in damages. The floods and landslides in China from May to September ranked second, costing $18 billion.

The Haiti earthquake, which caused damages of $8 billion, was especially destructive in view of the country’s already impoverished economy.

In 2011 natural disasters killed a total of over 50,000 people and caused 244.7 million victims worldwide. Economic damages from natural disasters were the highest ever registered, with an estimated US$ 366.1 billion.

Course Description
Disaster management studies are recognized as a field that combines decades of proven record in responding to disasters by humanitarian actors and core principles of humanitarian action and draws on theoretical perspectives and conceptual understanding from a variety of academic disciplines. The scope of the study of disasters has grown tremendously from the initial focus on natural hazards to now include a broad range of human-induced disasters, complex emergencies and crises. The emerging dynamics of economic globalization and competition for resources and resulting displacement, forced migration, conflict, and environmental refugees have added considerable complexity to the realm of disaster management.

This integrated programme defines humanitarian response within the framework of an understanding of development, with vulnerability and disaster risk reduction as an integral part of development. This online course recognizes the vulnerabilities faced by the poor and marginalized and the disproportionate impact of disasters endured by them in the developing world. In this course, the study of disaster risk reduction, disaster response and post-disaster recovery will be grounded in the values of justice, equity and social inclusion. This course addresses all stages of disaster management in a comprehensive and holistic manner; including (i) pre- disaster preparedness and mitigation, (ii) rescue and relief in the context of disaster and (iii) post disaster rehabilitation, reconstruction and recovery.
