INTRODUCTION:

SPSS is a great statistical analysis software that has been used for decades around the globe. Its strong data manipulation and analysis capabilities has made it the preferred analytical software among socio economic researchers and other fields of study. The software has the ability to accommodate wide and long datasets with ease.
Goolee Institute has organized this important introductory course in SPSS in order to bring participants to speed with the required skills of using SPSS for data manipulation and analysis.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:

  1. To enable participants understand quantitative data entry and data manipulation techniques in SPSS
  2. To build participants’ capacity in quantitative analysis and interpretation of analysis outputs for effective research reporting

Data Entry and Manipulation
• Categorical and continuous data
• Defining and labeling variables
• Adding variables and cases
• Transform, recode and compute variables
Descriptive Analysis
• Simple plots (pie charts and bar graphs)
• Cross-tabulation and Chi-square Tests
• Measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode)
• Quartiles and interquartile range
• Percentiles
• Skewness and Kurtosis
Basic Statistical Analysis
• Introduction to statistical tests and estimation
• Exploratory data analysis and checking assumptions (box plots, histograms, PP plots, QQ plots)
• One sample tests (t-tests, sign and signed rank tests)
• 2 Sample tests (t-tests, Mann-Whitney test)
• Introduction to One-way ANOVA
• Correlation and simple regression
Introduction to Advanced Analysis
• Basic logistic regression
• Multinomial regression
• Factor Analysis

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
• At the end of this course participants will be able to independently enter, manipulate and analyse their research data using SPSS statistical package.
• They will also be able to interpret statistical outputs for appropriate reporting

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Academic researchers, graduate students, project managers, monitoring and evaluation officers, development economists and statisticians among others are targeted.

COURSE DURATION:
This is a 5 day course

MODE OF DELIVERY:
The course is practical involving instructor-led illustrations, individual assignments, QA sessions and breakouts among others.
COST:
The course costs USD 450 (KSh30,000) covering course materials and conference services (excluding accommodation and other expenses).

Nairobi, Kenya

REQUIREMENTS:
Participants are advised to carry a laptop and an android operated smart phones while attending this course. Participants will get free SPSS software training license while attending this course. A prior knowledge in other data analytical packages is an added advantage.
