Job Title: Research Officer

Line Management: Research Manager

Contract Duration: 6 Months
Location: Juba with frequent travel to field locations

BBC Media Action uses media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries. To achieve this, it partners with civil society, local media and governments to:
• Produce creative programmes based on robust research in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.
• Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

Overall Purpose of the Job

The Research Officer will support the Research & Learning team and the Research Manager in designing, fielding, analysing and reporting on qualitative and quantitative research. The position will demand a highly motivated, organised and flexible individual who is confident in communicating insights to production and project teams within the organisation and, if necessary or required, to stakeholders outside of BBC Media Action.

Main Duties

The main duties of the Research Officer will include but not be limited to:

• Assisting with the research design.
• Liaising with people on the ground to recruit decision makers for interviews.
• Conducting depth interviews with decision makers, representatives from media organisations and local influencers.
• Conducting depth interviews and focus group discussions with audiences and target populations for both formative and evaluative purposes.
• Managing the collection of data – transcription and translation of depth interviews and collation of information on the media, thematic and system level depending on the project.
• Analysing transcripts from depth interviews and focus groups.
• Assisting with the preparation and analysis of quantitative data.
• Assisting with reporting to different audiences.
• Where required supervise and mentor researchers within the team and with partner organisations in conducting interviews and focus groups.
• Travel throughout South Sudan when necessary.
• Perform other duties as required in the establishment and management of the project.

Person Specification - required knowledge, skills and experience
• A minimum bachelor degree from in social science or any relevant discipline.
• Previous experience in an NGO or research agency.
• Good knowledge of research and evaluation methods.
• Strong IT skills, including Excel and Power point and Word
• Strong written and spoken English and Arabic.
• Strong report writing skills, communicating complex technical ideas using non-technical language to a wide range of audiences from journalists, production staff and development practitioners.
• Good time management skills, with a track record of delivering research findings to deadline.
• Demonstrable understanding of cultural diversity and cross-cultural research within South Sudan
• Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills: ability to communicate and conduct business at all levels from grassroots to the highest levels of governments and media.

This position is open to south Sudanese Only.
