1. Training Description

Breastfeeding is the use of human breast milk as a source of nutrition for infants and young children.
Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life gives children the best nutrition, immunity and
promotes mental development.
This training course will provide participants with the knowledge and practical skillset required to
promote and sustain successful breastfeeding.

2. Course Objectives

  • Participants will learn about breastfeeding and nutrition in infants from birth to six months old.
  • Participants will gain practical skills on how to successfully initiate breastfeeding and overcome
    breastfeeding challenges.
  • Participants will gain knowledge of breastmilk alternatives and have skills to offer practical solutions in
    absence of mother’s milk.

Day 1 Introduction to Breastfeeding

  • Anatomy of the human breast and breastfeeding mechanism
  • Composition of breastmilk
  • Benefits of breastfeeding
  • Factors that influence breastmilk production
  • Nutrition during lactation and breastmilk quality
  • Successful breastfeeding; timely introduction of breastfeeding and proper positioning
  • Challenges/barriers in breastfeeding

Day 2 Nutrition of The Newborn and Infants 0-6 Months

  • Recap on the previous day
  • Successful breastfeeding; timely introduction of breastfeeding and proper positioning
  • Challenges/barriers in breastfeeding
  • Baby hunger cues; how much milk is enough?
  • Expressing and storing breast milk
  • Baby-friendly breastfeeding initiative
  • Growth monitoring in infants 0 to 6 months old
  • Breastfeeding HIV-exposed infants and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT)
  • Breastfeeding demonstrations
  • Case Studies

Day 3 Relating the Theory of change to other logic models and programming aspects

  • Recap on the previous day
  • Identifying short-term, mid-term and long-term impacts from the Theory of Change to relate it to and create the Result Framework
  • Identifying components from the Theory of Change to relate it to and create the Logical framework and M&E framework/PMP
  • Identifying components to monitor and develop stories of change
  • Types of breast milk substitutes
  • Reasons for formula feeding
  • Preparation of formulas
  • Comparison of animal milk and breastmilk
  • Preparation of animal milk substitute
  • Problems associated with formulas feeding and milk substitutes
  • Nutrition education on breastfeeding
  • Demonstrations on how to prepare formulas and breastmilk substitutes
