Introduction

ODK or Open Data Kit is a set of free and open source tools that are used for field data collection using android mobile phones (Devices) and allows data submission to an online or cloud server. The ODK – Open Data Kit ecosystem includes the following components: ODK Collect, ODK Build, XLSForm, ODK Aggregate and ODK Manage as the major components. Other tools in the ODK ecosystem include ODK Briefcase, ODK Aggregate VM, ODK XLSForm Converter, ODK Validate, GEOODK, ODK Scanner, ODK Printers and the ODK Sensor Framework.

ODK Aggregate can be deployed on Google’s App Engine, enabling users to quickly run surveys without facing the complexities of setting up their own web service. ODK Aggregate can also be deployed locally on a Tomcat backed with a MySQL or PostgreSQL database server.

Participants are expected to have prior knowledge in ODK Collect and Survey authoring using xlsforms or to have attended our course on Mobile Based Data Collection Using ODK.

Course Objectives

The course will focus on the various options available for setting up ODK Aggregate based survey data hosting platforms.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Host survey data using ODK Briefcase as a server.

  • Setup ODK Aggregate locally on Tomcat for Linux.

  • Setup ODK Aggregate locally on Tomcat for Windows.

  • Setup ODK Aggregate on Google’s App Engine.

  • Extract and publish data to external applications.

Course contents

  • ODK refresher.

  • How to use ODK Briefcase as a server without having to install ODK Aggregate.

  • Setup and Installation of ODK Aggregate on App Engine (cloud).

  • ODK Aggregate Local server setup.

Installing on Tomcat for Linux.

Installing on Tomcat for Windows.

  • Publishing data to maps, Google Spreadsheets, Fusion Tables and external applications.

  • Extracting/Exporting data from ODK Aggregate.

  • Billing for App Engine installation.

  • Configurations for Network Access.

Server firewall configuration.

Making server visible on the internet (optional).

Establishing a DNS name for the server.

Methodology

The instructor led trainings are delivered using a blended learning approach and comprise of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professionals and trainers in these fields.

All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English. The participants should be reasonably proficient in English.

Cancellation policy

Payment for the all courses includes a registration fee, which is non-refundable, and equals 15% of the total sum of the course fee.

  1. Participants may cancel attendance 14 days or more prior to the training commencement date.

  2. No refunds will be made 14 days or less to the training commencement date. However, participants who are unable to attend may opt to attend a similar training at a later date, or send a substitute participant provided the participation criteria have been met
