Embedding the prevention of gender-based violence into humanitarian programming

Introduction
Christian Aid’s Gender Justice Strategy outlines commitments towards achieving a vision of a world in which neither women nor men are excluded, marginalised, poor, or discriminated against because of their gender. One of these commitments is demonstrating a significant contribution towards a reduction in gender-based violence (GBV), and specifically changing social norms that promote or condone it. As part of the World Humanitarian Summit, Christian Aid committed to enhance its gender-sensitive programming and policy work, as well as improving our gender-sensitive and inclusive practice by embedding gender and inclusion awareness into our ways of working. Finally, Christian Aid is a signatory to the Call to Action on protection from GBV in emergencies, and as part of this, is investing in capacity building support in a number of countries, whilst conducting research in contribution to best practice in GBV programming in states affected by violence and fragility. Our humanitarian programmes will mainstream protection, being underpinned by sector wide principles and standards, such as those with Sphere, Core Humanitarian Standards, and the Act Alliance, as well as the ‘Do No Harm’ approach.
